Tipperary man Michael "Piper" Cooney has just released a new recording, A STONE'S THROW, featuring 12 tracks of traditional tunes picked up at home and abroad. Friends and musicians Kevin Burke, Ged Foley, Tom Hall, and others round out his sound with accompaniment, combining tradition and innovation. Michael's own musical journey began at a young age and was greatly encouraged by his father. He learned tunes from local accordion and fiddle players like Dan Cleary, Sean Ryan, Paddy O'Brien, Pat Lyons, and Niall Cleere. When he wasn't studying firsthand, he was listening to his dad's old tapes of Johnny Doran, Willie Clancy, Seamus Ennis, and other master pipers. Later, Michael enjoyed the sounds of Planxty and the Bothy Band. In the 1980s, the multiple All-Ireland winner moved to the United States, where he met with more great musicians, including Andy McGann and Joe Burke.
